Fuel!
Team 1 is home (or almost). Team 2 has left Mponela and is ready to get out in the field. We’re in place to get started tomorrow with installations. As we drove up to Mzuzu (northern Malawi) we noticed the roads are much better than last year. Before we entered Mzuzu we decided to do a driver switch and pulled into a fuel station. As we were trying to leave we jokingly asked if there was diesel (we haven’t found any in over a week) and the answer was YES! So we filled up! Ready to go!!

Rain?
Woke up to grey clouds, sprinkles, and it was cold…not a word I use in Malawi. Especially Sept/Oct. We went to the flat lands after yesterday’s hikes. Found happy people, some new songs as well as standards. Most of the villagers followed from well to well.

How far?!?
LONG hikes today! Down steep slopes and back up again. ‘We are so grateful you are here. Other NGOs shun us for our steep terrain and lack of roads, and yet here you are, with us, with this clean water’ ‘Be sure to take back our gratitude to those who stayed behind. We are so very thankful.’

Mid week
We’ve had some long days. Distances, number of wells installed, heat, very rough roads. Of course it’s all worth it when you see the smiles (and astonishment), receive the chickens, glory in the colors, dance with the women, realize the time you are giving to those who used to fetch water from “over there”. They say we are blessing them, but I know I’m feeling blessed. 💗🔥💦

Monday!
We got fuel delivered and were able to get moving again today! We moved to Dowa (again still central Malawi) with parts for 50 wells, checked into our hotel, unloaded 37 wells’ parts (pic taken by Jamie Jones), and went out and installed 11! That’s a long day! But so worth it.
Many new wells had water nearby, either streams, rivers, or irrigation. Close but not safe to drink. And some were interesting to get pics of…I had to cross a stream and look down on one, I was above another (after being below it to get the data entered).

Moved
Jamie and I moved to Dowa district (still central Malawi) on Thursday. We put in wells all week until about 1 on Saturday (a half day) when our truck told us (with a sputter) that one tank was empty and the other 1/4 full. So we headed back to the hotel and will enjoy this quiet Sunday and await the arrival of diesel back in fuel stations (hopefully).
FO Kaponda put together this video of one of our days out! Great showing.
